    • The names Dormer and Dormar [and presumably Dorman] derived from Amars or Amory, near Caen, France. Gilbert D'Amory had grants from Robert D'Oylley in Oxford, England, and was a benefactor to the Eynsham Abbey. In 1129 Roger and Robertde Amar witnessed the Charter of Oseney. About 1180 Ralph was Lord of Hamars, Normandy, and in 1198 Alice Dumari and Goeffrey her son were of Bucks [Buckinghamshire, England]. In the 13th century Roger de Amar held part of the honour ofD'Oyllyn in Bucks from the Earl of Warwick, and the Abbot of Oseney held from him 1 fee of the honour of Doylly. The name frequently occurs later in Oxford and Bucks.; and in 1326 Sir Richard Damory of Bucks, Oxford, and Somerset wassummoned by writ as a baron. From a younger branch derived William De Aumers of Bucks 1311, 1319, and Geoffry Dormer (Daumer) of West-Wycombe, Bucks, 14th century; ancestor of the Earls of Carnarvon, and the Lords Dormer. From a branchin Somerset descended the Damers or Damorys Earls of Dorchester. (The Norman People)
