      Tragedy Ends Fishing Trip:

      Woman Drowns as Boat
      Hits Obstruction, Sinks

Marie Hollomon Victim; Two Men Companions
Make Way to Shore Near North Landing.

While her two male companions frantically sought help, a woman
employe of a Norfolk tavern drowned in North Landing River a quarter
of a mile east of North Landing Bridge yesterday afternoon.

The woman was identified by Norfolk County Police as Marie
Hollomon. The two men were Con-
nie Wells, of 831 5th St., and Wes-
ley Frye, of 343 Victory Blvd;, both
      of Portsmouth.

The two men, police said, met
the woman in the morning at the
      Virginia Tavern, Norfolk, where
she worked. Later the three hired
a 14-foot boat and went fishing. On
the return trip, the craft struck a
log about 1:30 p.m. On impact, the
motor jumped up and caused the
fishing gear to shift, which re-
sulted in the craft's stern sinking.

      Blocked by Swamp

Unable to help the woman, the .
two men swam toward shore, but
were unable to reach safety be-
cause of swamp conditions. By us-
ing a long pole they pulled each
      along. They reached safety about
two hours after the sinking, it was
      reported last night.

      "After we arrived, Chief Hubert
Swain, of the Fentress Fire De-
partment, said last night, "we im-
      mediately began grappling oper-
ations and were able to locate the
      victim within about 10 minutes.

"The boat was about 60 feet off
shore, and the woman's body was
found about 50 feet farther out. The
boat's bow was sticking about two
feet out of the water." The Great
      Bridge Fire Department also as-
      sisted in grappling.

      Officer A. R. Cuthriell investi-
gated for the Norfolk County police.
The body of the victim was re-
      moved to Sturtevant Funeral
      Home.
