      Deceased Name: Elizabeth Relfe Hobbs Edwards
      RALEIGH -- Elizabeth Relfe Hobbs Edwards, 93, died the 24th of January, 2005, surrounded by her family.

      She was born October 11, 1911, at "Riverside", on Historic Durants Neck, New Hope, Perquimans County, NC, the first daughter and oldest child of Charles N. Hobbs and Sarah Elizabeth Relfe Hobbs. Following the early death of her mother,she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Mary Elizabeth Keaton Relfe and L.C. Relfe of New Hope.

      Her lifelong love for North Carolina and its history came from her early experiences and family life in New Hope, Elizabeth City, Belhaven, Nags Head and Lake Junaluska.

      She was an alumna of Duke University and East Carolina University, Class of 1932 and taught school in Wilmington and Farmville. She married E. Wahab Edwards in 1934 and made her home in Rocky Mount, NC from 1939 until she moved to theFountains of the Albemarle in Tarboro in 1999.

      She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, E. Wahab Edwards, in 1977, and her beloved daughter, Rebecca Edwards Schaefer, in 2000.

      She is survived by her daughter, Jean Relfe Edwards Carr, and her husband, G. Paul Carr of Raleigh and son-in-law, Brian E. Schaefer of Palo Alto, CA.; grandchildren include Elizabeth Relfe Carr Nager and husband, Bailey Nager of Tyron,NC, Jonathan Paul Carr and wife, Susan W. Carr of Raleigh, Markham Lee Carr and wife, Mercedes Bransfield of Chapel Hill, Eleanor Schaefer Johnson and husband, Joel Johnson of Raleigh and Jillian Relfe Schaefer of Palo Alto, CA.

      She lived long enough to know and enjoy five great-grandchildren, Adams Bailey Carr Nager, Charles Keaton Carr Nager, and Bryson Paul Carr Nager of Tyron, NC, and Ella Lee Carr and Paul Waters Carr of Raleigh.

      She is survived by one sister, Nell Hobbs Gay of Seaboard, NC, and many beloved nieces, nephews and other extended family.

      A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 28th at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount, where she had been a faithful member since 1939.

      Her family will gather for the burial in the Relfe family plot in Old Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC later that afternoon.
