    6. [S2446] Place was given as Newmarket, Massachusetts. It was incorporated in 1727 by the Province of Massachusetts, although the town was never in Massachusetts. Originally part of the Province of Maine granted to Mason and Gorgas, the area wasdesignated as New Hampshire when Mason and Gorgas disassociated their holdings in 1629. It was in the area designated as Province of New Hampshire by William and Mary in 1691. Although it was actually in the Province of New Hampshire, the Governors were the same people as those for the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Province of New Hampshire finally got free of the Province of Massachusetts in 1741 with the appointment of its own Governor, Benning Wentworth, whopromptly claimed part of the Province of New York. That disputed area eventually became Vermont.
