GOR07362.TXT Benjamin STEVENS (Reverend)
Frost, John Eldridge. Colonial Village. Republished by Kittery Historical Society, Kittery, ME. The Cabinet Press, Inc., Milford, N.H., 1980; Doc 3-27: He was the second Congregational minister of Kittery Point, Kittery, York, ME.He came to Kittery Point as assistant to the aging Rev. John Newmarch and succeeded him when he retired. He was a scholarly dignified man, a gentleman of breeding and distinction. His father, a Charlestown, MA pastor, was killed at homeby smallpox along with wife, two children, sister-in-law, and maid. His son Benjamin, age 7 months at the time, was taken from the home by a nurse before the others died. Benjamin was an alumnus of Harvard. Only fear that "Dr. Stevens"might have loyalist sympathies prevented his election as president of Harvard College. He was one of the founders of the Pisctagua Association of Ministers, and at death left his books at the parsonage as a circulating library for theclergy of surrounding towns. Reverend Jonas HARTWELL succeded him.
