1790 US Census cited in unidentified newspaper clipping with comments on the name WESTFIELD: Owner of 12 slaves and head of family.
Regarding the name WESTFIELD: The place in County Norfolk, ENGLAND was spelled Westfeld in 1050 and Westfelda in 1086. The Westfield in County Sussex, ENGLAND was spelled Westewelle in 1086 and Westefelda in 1124. Both places havethe same meaning "Western Feld." The Old English word, feld had the meaning "open country, land free of woods, plain." It was not until the latter part of the 16th century that the spelling field began to denote a plot of arable land.
No individuals of the name could be located in the presently available early European directories.
Burke's General Armory describes the two different Westfield arms.
